8 Body Shape Types: What to Know About Each Female Body Shape

There are 8 body shape types: hourglass, top hourglass, bottom hourglass, spoon, triangle (pear), inverted triangle, rectangle and apple. Seven of the 8 body shape types come from the FFIT body shape classification published by Lee, Istook, Nam and Park in the International Journal of Clothing Science and Technology (2007), and apple is this site's own rule.

A body shape type is a group of figures with the same proportion between bust, waist, high hip and hips. Each body shape type has an exact measurement rule, so the body shape calculator returns one type from four measurements. The body shape types below follow the order the calculator checks them, followed by a body shape chart, a method to find your type and the shapes that are most often confused.

What Are the 8 Body Shape Types?

The 8 body shape types are described below with their measurement rules.

Apple

Apple body shape is a figure where the waist is equal to or larger than both the bust and the hips. Apple is this calculator's own rule, because the FFIT classification has no apple class. Apple figures carry more width at the midsection and often have slimmer legs. The full guide to the apple shape guide covers its variations.

Hourglass

Hourglass body shape is a figure where the bust and hips are nearly equal and the waist is much smaller. The hourglass rule is bust minus hips of 1 inch (2.5 cm) or less, hips minus bust under 3.6 inches (9.1 cm), and a waist at least 9 inches (22.9 cm) smaller than the bust or 10 inches (25.4 cm) smaller than the hips. The guide to the hourglass body shape explains the signs.

Bottom Hourglass

Bottom hourglass body shape is a figure where the hips are 3.6 to under 10 inches (9.1–25.4 cm) larger than the bust, the waist is at least 9 inches (22.9 cm) smaller than the hips, and the high hip divided by the waist is below 1.193. Bottom hourglass is a variation covered on the hourglass page.

Top Hourglass

Top hourglass body shape is a figure where the bust is more than 1 and less than 10 inches (2.5–25.4 cm) larger than the hips and the waist is at least 9 inches (22.9 cm) smaller than the bust. Top hourglass is a variation covered on the hourglass page.

Spoon

Spoon body shape is a figure where the hips are more than 2 inches (5.1 cm) larger than the bust, the waist is at least 7 inches (17.8 cm) smaller than the hips, and the high hip divided by the waist is 1.193 or more. The high hip creates a "shelf" above the hips. The guide to the spoon body shape shows how to recognize it.

Triangle (Pear)

Triangle body shape, also called pear, is a figure where the hips are at least 3.6 inches (9.1 cm) larger than the bust and the waist is less than 9 inches (22.9 cm) smaller than the hips. The guide to the pear figure lists its variations.

Inverted Triangle

Inverted triangle body shape is a figure where the bust is at least 3.6 inches (9.1 cm) larger than the hips and the waist is less than 9 inches (22.9 cm) smaller than the bust. The guide to the inverted triangle body shape explains the signs.

Rectangle

Rectangle body shape is a figure where the bust and hips are within 3.6 inches (9.1 cm) of each other and the waist is less than 9 inches (22.9 cm) smaller than the bust and less than 10 inches (25.4 cm) smaller than the hips. The guide to the rectangle body shape covers its variations.

Body Shape Chart

The body shape chart below compares the 8 body shape types by their main proportions.

Bottom hourglass hips larger strong low (ratio < 1.193)
Top hourglass bust larger strong —
Spoon hips larger defined high (ratio ≥ 1.193)

How Do You Find Your Body Shape Type?

You find your body shape type in three steps.

  1. Measure your bust, waist, high hip and hips with a soft tape, using the measuring guide for bust, waist and hips.
  2. Enter the four measurements in inches or centimeters.
  3. Read the body shape type that matches your measurements.

Which Body Shapes Are Most Often Confused?

Body shapes with similar hip and bust differences are most often confused. Pear and hourglass differ by waist definition, as shown in pear vs hourglass body shape. Spoon differs from pear and hourglass by the high-hip shelf, as shown in spoon vs pear vs hourglass. Apple and pear differ by where the width sits, as shown in apple vs pear body shape.

What Is the Most Common Body Shape?

Rectangle is the most common body shape: about 46% of more than 6,300 women in a North Carolina State University body-scan study had a rectangle figure, while only 8% had an hourglass figure. The rarest body shape guide shows every reported share.

Are Body Shape and Body Type the Same?

Body shape and body type are used as synonyms for figure proportion, but "body type" also refers to somatotypes such as ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph. The guide to body shape vs body type separates the two systems.

Where Did Fruit Body Shape Names Come From?

Fruit names such as pear and apple describe where width sits on the body, and the fashion industry uses them as shorthand for figure classes. The history of body shape types traces these names.
